Large sloping town garden
Location: Stratford-Upon-Avon
The Brief
The house was to have an extension built and so the client wanted the garden to be redesigned bearing this in mind.
The client wanted to be able to host large parties on occasion.
They wanted a large patio area by the house, with wheel chair access to the main garden.
They also required areas for a large garden work shed, potting shed, fruit and vegetable beds.
They particularly liked the use of curves and flowing lines in a garden.
New fencing had already been constructed to one side of the garden and they wanted a hedge to the other side.
The Design
The design solution to the fall in the garden was to create a series of terraces with sloping paths between.
The first stone terrace curves from one corner of the new build out to create a quarter of a circle. This would be retained with tanalised timber, and painted a dark oak colour.
The patio would be softened by planting pockets and the beds by the retaining timber wall planted with five small Photinia 'Red Robin' standard trees under-planted with Rosmarinus prostratus.
The steps would be constructed slightly off centre on the patio to reach the gently sloping path to the main circular lawn. Opposite to the steps would be a small gravel garden with a arbour that can be converted into a covered barbeque area.
The new timber gazebo by the circular lawn serves as a focal point in the garden and provides a place to sit and relax and enjoy the garden from a different perspective.
A wide curved sloping area of grass connects the circular lawn to the more functional part of the garden. Within this area would be constructed a large work shed with a living sedum roof, a potting shed and an area for growing fruit and vegetables.
